Highlights

  • We used to switch off from work and sleep for an hour in afternoon
  • I don't enjoy the family dramas on TV today
  • I can guarantee that this show will work even if you bring it after 10 years
It's more than just a rush of nostalgia if you’re one of Hum Paanch’s many fans, that nonetheless possessed crazy, unforgettable and relatable characters - the weirder they used to get, the more we loved them. If there's one thing TV has got right during the lockdown, it is getting back the classic shows of the 90s to the small screen. It's raining 90s throwback time during quarantine and we're not complaining. Hum Paanch is one of those TV shows that has become strangely timeless. The show that first aired in 1995 has arrived to find a whole new generation of fans. Remember, its ridiculously attractive and funny theme song that was so hard to get out of the head?
All the characters became stars in their own right after the show. 'I am happy to see Hum Paanch return to the small screen. All the characters of Hum Paanch look like they were just meant to be. Whether it is a middle-class family or an upper-middle class family, you will find someone from our family who is very similar to the member of your family. People related to our Hum Paanch family so much that mothers used to come up to me and say our daughter is very similar to one of my daughters including Sweety (character played by Rakhi Vijan) or Kajal (Bhairavi RaichuraThen). All the characters put in a lot of effort to play their parts,' shares Shoma Anand, who played the character of Bina Mathur in the popular sitcom.

Ashok Saraf on Hum Paanch: When your concept is so strong, you don't need technology

After the return of epics - BR Chopra's Mahabharata and Ramanand Sagar's Ramayana, classics like Zabaan Sambhalke, Dekh Bhai Bhai and Sarabhai Vs Sarabhai among others, now, Hum Paanch the iconic comedy is back on TV. When Mirror Online reached out to him, however, Ashok Saraf aka Anand Mathur of Hum Paanch was clueless about the comedy show returning to the small screen.

Hum Paanch Serial

Many shows aren't remembered because they come and disappear so quickly, but this show created its audience as it had aspirational fantasy that kept the viewers hooked right from the start.'After 25 years, Hum Paanch is brought back on the screen. There is so much stress in the current scenario that I feel the decision to get back this show was a right one. It will bring a smile to the faces of people for at least some time in the day. I can guarantee that this show will work even if you bring it after 10 years. Yeh serial waqt ke saath chala hain. Through humour, we reflected the issues of a common man and difficulties that a family faces. It is very relatable. People can identify with the characters of the show. So it creates a connection,' she explains.

Hum Paanch Serial Cast

Bhavana Balsaver: We had done 107 retakes for a scene in Dekh Bhai Dekh

Hum Paanch Cast Name

A revival of the popular 1990s sitcoms by the national broadcaster has made it the most watched TV network during the first three weeks of coronavirus lockdown. The channel has seen tremendous growth in viewership. The audience is running back to those shows. For kids who grew up in the '90s, these were the shows for which one arranged, (and re-arranged, if needed) the rest of the day for. Bhavana Balsaver was insanely funny and loved for her character in Dekh Bhai Dekh, that highlighted the dynamics of most Indian joint families in the funniest way possible.

Shoma, had a good laugh talking about the stories and events that transpired on the sets. They were insanely funny and crazy, like a big dysfunctional family. 'We had spent six years together and I feel we should do a show together again. I miss my crew. In those years, we hardly spent time at home. We were on set all the time. There was no vanity van then and all the girls and I shared one make up room. In that one room, we used to get ready together, eat together and have fun together. I assume we will be the first artistes from the industry who used to take an afternoon nap of an hour after lunch. We used to switch off from work and sleep in that one room for an hour,' Shoma shares. 'But it never meant that we didn't deliver our work on time. That was never the case. Aaj kal woh zamana nahi raha. The industry has become thoroughly professional. The artistes are not allowed to rest,' she adds.
Rakhi Vijan let us in on a little-known incident from during the Hum Paanch days when Shoma was found snoring during the shoot. Shoma laughed in response, 'We never felt we were shooting. We used to feel at home on the sets. We had over 2 pages of dialogues in a scene and I used to wait for my turn to arrive and then if there were retakes then it went longer and I used to forget what I was to do. I used to be so engrossed watching them perform that I used to forget that now it is my turn to speak. At times, I used to doze off in between the shoots waiting for my turn. But we enjoyed that time.'

Deven Bhojani is back with best 90s sitcoms to provide some genuine comic relief

Do teens know the 90s sitcoms? It was simply the happiest decade. It was also the time when our day's plan revolved around the telecast of our favourite TV shows. A talented comic actor, Deven Bhojani, is someone who has managed to survive for over three decades in the midst of a rapidly evolving and competitive environment. Most people will remember Bhojani for playing Karima in Dekh Bhai Dekh, Gopal Labhashankar Thakkar aka Gattu in Baa Bahoo Aur Baby or Balkrishna Gokhale (Anna) in Bhakarwadi.

'It was natural acting. At times we used to push each other or do some antics without informing each other in the scenes but today you can't do anything like that. You never know how your co-actors will react. Rakhi was a big prankster and she used to do all kinds of mischiefs and her character was such but we never held back on suggestions and it all reflected in the final product. It was so natural,' she avers.
Viewers would come back to watch the surprising story-telling style of a middle-class white-collar worker, Anand Mathur, who always found himself in trouble because of his five daughters — Meenakshi, Radhika, Sweety, Kajal, and Chhoti. The three elder daughters were Anand and his first wife's children. The last two were Anand and Bina's daughters.

Exclusive! Soni Razdan: On the sets of Buniyaad, I craved for idli and sambar during my pregnancy

Soni Razdan can be remembered as playing her daughter Alia Bhatt's on-screen mother Teji in Raazi (2018) and for her power-packed performances in films like Yours Truly (2018) and No Fathers In Kashmir (2019), most recently. Now, with the re-run of Ramesh Sippy's Buniyaad, the audience too can walk down memory lane with her and reconnect with Lochan (Razdan's character in the serial).

'I missed working with Ashok ji (Ashok Saraf) after doing the show. I learnt a lot from him. When the shoot started all the girls were very young, I had worked with Ashok ji before but this was my first comedy show. The first day of the shoot was fine but as days passed the girls delved so deep in their characters that they created a magic with their acting. I will always be thankful to Ashok ji for teaching me the importance of right timing in comedy. Eventually, we had become so familiar with our characters that we just needed the episode information we were shooting. We didn't need any assistance on how we had to play our roles. It came naturally to all of us,' she informs.
'We had become a family. We used to miss each other on days we were not shooting. Woh waqt alag tha, yeh waqt bahut alag hain serial main acting karneka,' she adds.
Shoma unapologetically mentions that it was the best era of working in television. 'Now directors and producers are burdened to deliver a certain number of episodes every day. Then there are actors who have date problems. So at times just a close up shot is done and then the master is done later so in such a situation acting doesn't stay natural. Also, you have the pressure to deliver within a limited time so acting suffers. You don't know what the other artiste has done. We used to shoot master in Hum Paanch so we knew what the previous scene was and how we needed to react. But now things are very professional. Now, it is daily. We used to shoot comfortably a month prior for our weekly episodes. Now as one scene is done, 4 pages come to your desk for cut 2. There is no time to rehearse. We don't get time to think about dialogue delivery, we just say the dialogues. There is a lack of intense feeling in acting now,' she asserts.
Shoma reveals that the cast was crazy about food. 'We used to eat so much. When one was giving a shot the other used to go to the room and eat his/her dabba. If one person asked for coconut water, pani-puri or ice cream or bhel puri, the spot boys and production manager knew they had to get it for all of us. If one used to call for food all used to ask for the same thing to eat. I don't remember a show where I have enjoyed so much,' she confesses. 'Today also we share a strong bond. The kids call me and we talk for hours. Vandana, Rakhi and Bhairavi today also call me Maa. I am in touch with Ashok ji and his wife too. I never had such a strong bond with any crew. Today, after the serials get over, people lose touch but for the Hum Paanch team things never changed,' she says.
And for more TV laughs, Shoma backs-up on shows of her time.'Now if a punchline is written you have to say it but in our days we relied more on natural acting. I don't enjoy the family dramas on TV today. I don't watch TV regularly. It has become commercial. If a character is doing well then the entire story is around them or if TRPs are coming from a particular character then it will all revolve around it. All want to make money. There should be happy family dramas like Hum Paanch. Hum Paanch can definitely be made again but it has to be old characters only. I think it will be a very good show,' says Shoma.
